Who cares about 27C128s or 27C256s, its the AT29C256 that everyone wants.

As for the programmer, if it can do all the eproms of the Xtronics, has Windows based software, works of your parallel port AND sells for under $149, then it is worth looking at.

There are cheaper programmers than the Xtronics, but NONE that do ALL the things the Xtronics does WITH Windows based software AND off the parallel port for under $149 to my knowledge. Most of the cheaper ones use a PCI or (worst) an ISA card and only work on Desktops, not a the parallel port - which is a major concern if you use a notebook (which most of us do for a scan tool).

So there's your standard - the Xtronics Pocket Programmer.

Looks like there might be a new standard. I asked a little question of them and in less than an hour I had my reply. Also of note, this programmer uses the parallel port for programming. And at $79 it is a real bargan.

Dear Sir,

Yes, the programmer will program the newer 29C series, as well as the 29F
series. The software is also Windows based, an older DOS version is also
available, but does not support all devices.

Best Regards

Go for it and let us know who it works out. I already have a Pocket Programmer, but if it can do everything we want for our eprom burning and it's 1/2 the price, what's not to like about it.

So buy one and let us know how it all works out. The good, the bad and the ugly. The only DISADVANTAGE will be that if you have ANY problems you will have to deal with the manufacturer to resolve it. You won't have the resource of all the guys that use the same unit that will be able to help you out.

There was a batch of "bad programmers" from Xtronics and becuase so many guys had the Pocket Programmer, we were able to determine "as a group" that those Pocket Programmers were bad. That's the last criteria - how well does the manufacturer stand behind their product. I know a number of guys had bad Pocket Programmers that were WELL BEYOND the warranty period and Xtronics STILL replaced the units FREE.

I have one that runs at least 12 hours a day.
Then the other is tossed around and used with the laptop in car.
I finally dropped the one enough times that after 3 years it failed, took $59 to fix it and come back with better software.
The one on 12 hours a day has been running like that for over 6 mons now wothout a hiccup.
Please when I've called them someone that had a clue answered the phone.

Hard to beat that track record.

I bought a Pocket Programmer on ebay from karl@xtronics.com which is basically buying it straight from Xtronics since Karl Schmidt works at Xtronics and puts them on ebay. Anyway, this was three weeks ago and I still haven't recieved it yet. Needless to say, I'm getting a little pissed and I'm sick of using my buddy's burner. Anybody else have this problem?

Give Karl a call and ask when and how it was shipped. When I bought my Pocket Programmer 2 years ago it took 3-4 weeks for me to receive it because I didn't have it sent "Express". They sent it my regular mail and it took that long.

I ordered mine on-line via their web-page about a month ago on a Monday, I had it by Thurs the same week and had it sent UPS Ground the cheapest option they offered.

Ha! And here I was thinking of making a budget EPROM/Flash burner. Looks like it's here already. I'll probably still do something.

Everywhere else this particular burner shows up, it's going for $150+, wonder what the deal is? $79 is a good price.

I called Karl and he said it must have gotten lost in the mail. What a great company cause he said that he'd send a new one immediately and if I happened to get two of them I could just send one back.

Same here... I had it same week. So far I like the pocket programmer more than the shooter burner and others that we have at work. Plus its nice and portable to keep in the car. Plus you get all the tech support you need on the boards.

Ordered one today, for the price it was too good to pass up, especially with the cable, software and all included. The 10 volt operating voltage is easy to deal with, I mean if you are going to actually program your own PROM's you should be resourceful enough to find a 10v power supply.

I just saw this one on ebay, and was curious to know if you more knowledgeable guys here have an opinion on it... please check it out, as it's getting close to my birthday and I need to know whether I need to hint at this as my gift
