Code 24?

I went out for a test drive tonight. My car is running strong. It idles a little high about a 1000 in drive, but runs smooth and no hint of stalling in traffic with a/c on max. I got on a nice straight section of street and blasted down the street for a few blocks. When i let off the gas a little my Check Engine light came on and I pulled a code 24. I looked up 24 in my manual and found it to be a VSS code. My question is why did the computer choose now to look for a vss. I converted over to a TH350 and have not yet found a way to hook one up. I have been driving around now for a few weeks without one and have not had this occur yet. WHat exactly does the computer use the VSS for. I asume it uses it for cruise control, speedo, and various transmission functions that i don't need. Any thoughts are appreciated.
