WOT tuning...is an air/fuel gauge a good way to judge??
WOT tuning...is an air/fuel gauge a good way to judge??
I understand that you cannot use block learn to tune for WOT. But what about one of those auto meter air/fuel ratio gauges?? Would that help in tuning, or should I save my money for something else? Thanks in advance.

Yeah I would do that but it's kinda outta my budget right now and it's a big project that I don't want to get myself into right now. Will the air/fuel gauge give me a decent idea as to how I should tune at WOT? Thanks again.

Long term the WB will pay for it's self may times over. Both in fuel and time you'll spend chasing around trying to figure out where you are.
The oem O2s are just about useless. All they will tell you id if your richer or leaner then 14.7.
Grumpy, or anyone else, is there a schematic for the DIY-WB board? I looked around over there several times and didn't see one.
I know that at one time there was a delay in getting the boards because the person that was making them had other things happen that took priority. It'd be nice if you could make your own board and then it'd be a REAL DIY project.

Sure, you can get the part throttle portion set with just the stock narrow band O2 sensor.
For WOT tuning, there is a number of things you can do. rent an hour on a dyno equipped with a wide band sensor. or you can set up your chip so that it stays out of PE at higher MAP values and tune the higher MAP values in the VE table and with some interpolation you can get "pretty close" for the 100kpa MAP column, better than anything you could buy over the shelf.
really though wb02 seems like the easiest way to do it. there is even some info on how to hook the wbo2 into the ECM and log it in the ALDL data stream. then you can tune from the data stream alone. the hour of dyno rental will proably pay for all the equipment for the DIY WB.

While you can get the part throttle happy to satisfy the converter, using the NB, that's all you can accurately do with a NB.
Renting a chassis dyno at $50 an hour gets you 2 may 3 pulls on a cool day. Hardly cost effective. You can pay for a commercial WB quickly at that rate.
And the instant you get into the AE stuff the WB instantly shows how far off you were.
And if your tuning for off road use, then you can scrap all that silly closed loop stuff and tune for what the engine wants instead of the converter. And then the only way to really get anywhere is with a WB. But, once you do that you can GET what a CORRECT calibration really means.

I do have a board sitting here from the DIY-WB project. It's about 20% stuffed with components right now. I need to get back on it and finish it....

I think the worst the *delays* were was about a week.
For $4 it isn't worth the work it in my book.
If you have a problem getting a board write me.
