New Prom and Cam Specs
New Prom and Cam Specs
Hi,
I have been investigating on having a new eprom burned and two different companies, Jet Performance for example both
asked me for my cam specs. I installed a new 350cid HO/330hp
GM crate engine in my 87GTA with TPI and SDPC's vortec intake
manifold.
I purchased Tunercat and I have been looking at my stock
ABWT.Bin and the ARAP.Bin tables. No where do I see flags,
constants or tables where to enter the cam specs. So why
to these companies that claim to be chip experts ask for the
cam specs?
Thanks,

hmmmm
i'm kinda new at this one too but bare with me....
iv'e always wondered why they ask this also... from what i can tell they are literally trying to predict or forsee whats going to happen and take this into account......
personally thats to me the wrong way to do it...... i have a severly modified 383 with stealthram, lumpy cam, and 30lb injectors pumping through afrs......
i modified a arap bin the best that i could putting in what i had and what i wanted the computer to do like idle vs temp etc......
it works fine.... but know i have to get a scanner and look at whats going on and adjust accodingly... to me if i had try to compensate for cam and stuff alredy i could have possibly made a mess for myself........ they have been at it alot longer than i have so they could probably get away with it, but i'd just do my own if i were you........

Sorry to resurrect an older topic, but I've been thinking about PROM burning and cam upgrades as well. I know that stock, cam upgrades in SD cars are limited to an extent because of the stock PROM tables. Basically, what I think the aftermarket chip manufacturers want with cam specs are flow rates so that they can adjust the main spark tables accordingly (MAP v RPM v main spark advance). But from what I hear about those companies, I didn't think they did all that much tuning. I though it was just a generic program that mildly advanced spark.
Anyhow, with that said, by having your own burning equipment, you could with SD cars, no longer be limited in your choice of cams because of the computer, right? At least that's how I see it. Once you get the bigger cam, you can adjust the tables in the PROM accordingly, and eliminate "confusing" the stock chip with MAP values that are off the charts.
Am I anywhere near correct in these ramblings? If not, how does PROM tuning and cam selection correlate?

Yes,Well as with any internal combustion engine you do have limits but I am currently running a pretty big cam in my car 230/230 560/560 110 lsa and have no problems at all.
And these so called experts cant even get you close,You may think you are close until you see for yourself whats really going on.
