knock counts with winaldl

i was using winaldl on my engien today and it says spark counts. is that knock counts. i had 5 in my driving session. there was a "1" in the table but only in the 2850 range. there was 4 of them. at different MAP positions. so does that mean my engien is knocking at 2850? if i retard my base timing that should fix that right, but it will lower my performance. Im at 6° right now. or should i dont want to burn a chip yet because i dont have tunercat to change it. and i dont see winbin or the GMxxx one that works with the 8746 TBI computer. but how much knock counts is too much. i only had 5

Those counts are very possibly from the ECM forced knock test. If so then they are nothing to worry about. Once you can burn PROMs you will be able to bypass that test.

they were all in the 2850 rpm range, just in different MAP's. so is that when the ECM does it check.

The knock test is done while in PE mode.

I was kinda woundering the same thing as well. I had a 91 s-10 that i did some messin with and it always had 5-10 knocks in any number of random cells. I advanced the timing up till it knocked like crazy just to get an idea of what spark knock looks like. It would jump by 20-100 knock counts in high load cells. So i backed timing back to bout 5 degrees it was at 10. I've even gotten knocks from slammin the door so I would say 5 koncks is just random engine noises. I could be wrong cause i have never actually seen it said in writing. Just my observations

Every car is different. Not only are the ESC filters different but so are the knock sensors and how they're mounted. Then there is the actual way the ecm see's the knock and what actions are taken. Some people like myself get initially 10 counts of knock on average when I just start up. After driving for a while I might see one or 2 every once in a while which is either the self tests or the stiff suspension. I believe stock my computer will retard timing with 2 or more counts. I raised it to 4 but haven't encountered any knock. After the winter I'm going to raise it up to 10 and see how that works. Then I'll be able to see if it's real knock or not. You almost have to get a feel for the car before you can say a knock count was actual knock. More likely than not it's noise. With Diacom it's easer to see knock counts because when you graph it out it's vs time, you can do it with winaldl but you need to use something like excel to graph it out. Just datalog the sensors and see if when you went WOT there were a few knock counts. Do it a few times to be sure, then you know it's either a sloppy part in your drivetrain making noise or it's real knock.
