Newbie questions I can't find the answers to

I'm about to dive into this whole chip burning experience...

I've been experimenting with editing Bins. But I don't know what all of the fields mean.

I'm using the arap $6E bin & a 765 ecu

If someone could explain what these fields mean.. Point me to a FAQ, or point to some golden thread that I couldn't find via search, I'd *greatly* appreciate.

Now onto the questions!

Checksum- What exactly is this? I've read about it being an ID for the datastream.. and that it changes with the info being sent... So, is this essentially unimportant? Can I leave this at the default 5BE6 and it will work? Or does this field autoupdate?

Minimum LV8 to Enable PE- what's this field mean? I've read about editing PE's.. but what is the "LV8" and how do they correlate?

Single Fire FI Size @ 40psig- Is this the injector size? How do you account for a different fuel pressure setting?

Double Fire FI Size @ 40psig- How is this different from Single fire?

MAF High Diag Error threshold- Is this the constant for the MAF high voltage error? I see the high voltage code because I have the idle raised to account for my larger cam.. I assume changing this constant would correct it?

Highway mode- What is this? Some sort of fuel saving thing?

DFCO- What is this?

Stoich AF ratio- I assume this is the baseline for perfect A/F. What effect does changing this have?

That about does it as far as constants... The Tables are confusing me as well. I doubt that these can be answered simply.. But I don't know quite where to start on editting them.

Is there any sort of guide as to what the table values are, and how they changes affect them?

I'm hoping this post doesn't come off as a run of the mill newbie, "i'm too lazy to search/read, so I just ask the same questions over and over" It's not meant to be. I'd like for there to be a centralized description of these fields as I'm sure this isn't the first time people have had these questions.

thanks.

The checksum is the ecms way to making sure things add up code wise. At system check the ecm adds up the hex values, and then compares it to what it's stated as being in the prom. If they don't match the ecm knows the code is corrupted.

LV8 is a calulation of load, the ecm looks to see how much air is being used at what rpm to see how hard the engine is working. So there are alot of items that ref to LV8.

Yes, if the ecm thinks there is say 255 gm/sec of airflow at idle it sets a code. just a sanity check for the MAF sensor

Yes, fuel savings

DFCO, Deccleration Fuel Cut Off. Sudden throttle lift at High RPM, and the fuel shuts off.

14.7:1 is a number generally accepted to mean the best burn. Least unburnt fuel. Converters need to AVERAGE that AFR to work well.

You'll learn more and be better at tuning by experimenting and trying a lil of this and a little of that. If I was say to eliminate a Chuggle add 2% VE at 55 K/Pa at 1,600 RPM wouldn't make sense, to any new guy, the have no concept of what it is. You gotta make small changes and note what/how they feel to you. It's like surgery, you can read about it for years, and that don't mean dodo when you first pick up a scalpel.

Get your feet wet, take notes, and read read read,
then ask intelligent guestions and you'll get answers.
The better the guestion the better the answer.

Awesome. Exactly the response I was looking for.

Thanks Grumpy
