Romulator Success.....

Guys,

Thought I would share with you that I got my Romulator the other day and tried it for the first time yesterday.

The unit a sinch to hook up, expacially if you already have the ZIF adapter on your memcal.

I loaded all the software and headed out to the garage to try it out. SInce it was raining yet another day here in PA I only got to test a few functions of it out. I mainly wanted to concentrate on my hard starting after the engine is warmed up.

I made about 30 adjustments to the crank fuel pulse width vs Temp and also CFPW multiplier tables to get a good quality start. Now the car fires right up even after letting it heat soak for a while.

I probably made roughly 30 or so adjustments in about a 1/2 hour period. This normally burning chips would have taken an entire afternoon.

The system is a MAJOR plus to anyone considering tuning. Dyno tuning would be a snap with this. I just can't wait to get it out on the road and play with it some more.

I also played with my desired idle. Some of the tables automatically update as soon as you make the change and some of them require a "forced" update. Seems like constants need the forced, but the rest are nearly instantaneous.

When I would make a change to the idle, after about 5 sec you would see the idle swing to the new value. KInda nice for finding the idle your car likes best. And oh yeah, that was also included in the ~30 minutes of tuning, so add another 5-8 changes to the above stated.

Pretty slick is all I can say. Kudos to Tunercat and Xtronics! They really outdid themselves with this one.

Quick question, do you have to use tuner cat with the romulator.

I'm intrigued by the Romulator(sounds like something out of ***** Wonka I think. )

How do you scan the ecm to see what it's saying...aka do you use Moates and then move back to Tunercat to mod, etc? Do you have to leave the romulator plugged into the cigarette lighter and computer or can you unplug it while you aren't tuning? It appears as if it would use the same socket as Moates requires.

Thanks!

Yeah that is the only hang up, it too uses a serial port, therefore its one or he other. I am going to investigate using the parallel port for the romulator, and the serial for the ease scanner software.

Do any of you computer gurus know if the 25pin=>9 pin adapters would work the same? Thanks.

The unit is get its power from the laptop or the ECM which ever is connected.

Nope, you can’t use that adapter to make a parallel port a serial port. That 25pin=>9pin adapter is made for the old school serial port connectors which used to be 25 pin. The parallel port and serial port are completely different ports and can not be easily converted.

What you can use is a USB to serial port adapter. Then you will have 2 serial ports and be able to tune and scan at the same time. If you don’t have USB on your laptop you can get a USB PCMCIA card.

Yep, me too.
I just finished playing with my AE stuff useing the Romulator & the RT tuner from tunercat, this is just awsome.
I got rid of my surging problem when going from park to drive.
I can't say enough abought how great this is to do Real Time Tuning.

I used my scanner for Map and WB O2 to fine tune my AE stuff at Idle.
Tomarrow I'm going to work on my WOT stuff , the WB O2 is showing an AFR of 10.2 to 11.2 at WOT so I'll make some runs and change My PE stuff to get the AFR to 11.5 or so and then work the Timing tables.

This is just great.

I'm new to the DIY board and was wondering.... Does the romulator take to place of the programmer? If I have the Moates software, romulator and Tunercat, is that all I need?

Jfreeman,

No you still need a programmer to get the chips burned.

MAybe a two in one rom/programmer is in the future, hint hint.

But not to complain, this system is "simple"y AWESOME.

ANyone tuning needs this to make life easier!

So if you still have to program the chip, what is the purpose of the romulator? Tell me if I am wrong here but here is my idea of how it is working. The romulator uses the current settings on the chip and allows you to make changes without programming the chip so you can see the effects of the the changes before programming but when you unplug the romulator you lose those changes. But you can take the data that you collected by using the romulator to tell you what you need program. Am I correct? Sorry for the newbie question but I am trying to determine exactly what all I need to start programming before I start buying stuff that I don't need.

So Tuner_RT is available, I'm assuming if you email TC about it they will sell it?

Keep us posted, I need to order the romulator, been holding out for the TC software.

jfreeman74:

I think the idea is that the romulator plugs into the ECM where the chip would normally go. The car runs on the .bin on your laptop, connected to the ECM THROUGH the romulator. That way you can make changes "on-the-fly" to find out what works best. When you get done tuning, you save your changes, burn a chip, unplug romulator, plug in chip.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong... But I think that's how it works. Sounds like THE way to tune, especially if you can run scanning software at the same time.

You don't need to own a Pocket Programmer to use the Romulator do you. Just making sure, as I am using the Batronix programmer and am considering purchasing the Romulator.
