Concrete Answer Needed

I need the facts on what cables work with the 165 ECM. I have acess to a max232 cable that is known good, from a friends 730ECM setup. Can I use that cable or do I need to build the 2 transistor cable? Also the 165 and 730 both operate at 8192 baud, right? If that is so why have I read a bunch that they need diferent cables anyway? Also do both ECMs put out the same amount of information per second or does the 730 spit out more?

Please clarify any or all of my above dilema, thanks!

max232 will work. if it doenst have a resistor youll need to jumper at the aldl connector.

Cool, thanks for the info. Can you give me the specifics about the jumpering I need to do? Also I will only have this cable for the initial startup of the new motor. So I will have to build myself a cable regardless in the next couple weeks. So that goes back to my question about bits of information per second, is the max232 faster then the 2 transistor? Does anyone know this?

He means you will need to put a 10k ohm resistor across pins A & B of the ALDL with the cable hooked up in order to get the 165 ECM to transmitt serial data.

There doesn't seem to be any speed difference or data difference with the max 232 over the 2 transistor cable. The 2 transistor cable costs about $8 in parts readily avialable from radio shack and takes about an hour to make.
