another linking to computer problem

The shorter version of the long story is that I am trying to tune my second TPI car now. The first was wrecked... yada yada yada.

Everything seemed to be linking fine on the first car, but now the linking issue is a million times worse. For this one I modified a code scanner with ABS checking ability. I did it this way because I just can't solder unless I am in a comfy position. (So under the dash is out of the question.) This way I have 3 prongs inside the adapter with a cable hanging off the side of it. It acutally looks pretty good, but that shouldn't cause any interference. Should it?

Now I can almost never get a good communication going, and if I do it only last for about 2 or 3 minutes at the most. Some only last a few seconds.

The car uses a '165 computer, laptop is a 386 compaq, cable is from Ruse, and the software is Moates version 8.52. I didn't change any settings on the laptop, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

For those of you doing a search... it turned out to be a bum ECM. I tried a spare and it worked. Just goes to show that these things can still work, even when they are broken.
