prom compatibility question

I have read all of the prom basics, sticky, prom topics, etc. I can see I have allot to learn, but in the meantime I want to put on AFR 180cc heads and change out the cam this winter. My question, what is the biggest Comp Cam I can run with either the stock prom or the SLP prom I currently have. I heard Comps 304 is the biggest cam you can run with a stock or near stock prom, without driveability problems.

I know it would not run near the potential as a well tuned prom, but if I can get the mechanical part done, it would encourage me to learn and burn to optimize my setup. In the mean time I am really looking for it to run well and pull hard right out of the box. Hopefully looking for high 12 low 13s with this combo and the other mods I currently have.

I know you guys really don't like to answer these lame what ifs, but I am sure someone out there has a working knowledge on what cam is the maxim compatible cam for a stock prom. Please help if you can, Thanks in advance.

Let me put in into perspective for you. Even a car with just an intake will show gains by tuning the ecm. You need to get the equipment if you are serious about getting the most out of your car. If you start to tune now, the chip will need less work when you upgrade the hard parts. some people claim that you can run with a stock chip and fat cam w/ no drive ability issues. those people don't know sheet. Trust me, even a stock engine will respond to prom changes. My 86 t/a is totally stock and runs alot better with my chip installed. The most important thing is to match the ecm tuning to the engine mods...

I agree, and I understand. There is some much to learn about the VE tables, timing curves and how they work with one another. It would be nice to have a 3rd gen member close to me to help with the hands on part, I learn allot quicker that way. But until then I really have to continue reading until I grasp the concept.

Ok what about this, give me your proven AFR heads and cam combo, and let me know your basic prom setup to get it running right out of the box, that way I can compare it to the stock prom and learn from there

I didn't think I would get the answer I was looking for, its would be nice to see the experience of Glenn, Trax, Grumpy, and several other members here write a book (hard copy) on the basics of prom burning, maybe title it "prom burning for dummies" I can add it to my other series collections

Just think of it, the monies you would make from the selling of books could buy more mods for your car

car wont run well at all with those mods(head/cam). mine did not and was forced to learn the art of eprom burns 7/03. the $$ investment is miinimal and value maximal vs the cost of the auto parts you have or will invest. yes i agree the info is sometimes hard to find. other than this site and crossfire and vette forum there is little out there. i think there is a book or two that goes into efi. not sure if it offers tuning 101. dont feel bashful in asking Q's on this forum.

This might sound crazy but you just need to start making changes to your chip. I know how to do many things from expert guitar playing to building puters, like the computer I'm using right now. The best thing is to dive in and learn to swim after your in the water. TRUST ME! There is a million people in the water ready to help. You can't learn to swim if you don't jump in....
