Just mounted mine yesterday
This is in my 83 camaro - I had the sensor installed right behind the end of my coated ypipe, but before the cat. The cable on the sensor runs toward the front of the car and it wiretied (Loosely!) to the screws on the bottom of the ground effects (used the wireties that have a screw hole, and ground them thinner to fit.
I removed the fender shield that hides the ECM harness and radio antenna entry points. I drilled a new hole (that was less fun than anticipated), ran the round end of the connector to the LM-1 in there.
I removed the front bracket that holds the front corner of the ground effects (right by the tire) to the body. This let me take the end of the sensor wire and pull it up into that little compartment where the new hole is.
I don't believe much water gets into that area, but I know there is lots of air
I forgot to take pics as I went along - let me know if you want some.

I ended up welding the bung at the end of my y-pipe. The wire goes up the outside of the fender and in the window. It's a quick way to check a/f ratio. The sensor can be removed and the bung capped w/o jacking the car up.

I ran mine up through the shifter boot. The connection is actually in the trans tunnel above the shifter. Unless I start fording streams with it, I don't think its going to get wet. I also use a zip tie to keep it up there.
I mounted my sensor approximately where the AIR tube would be on the cat.
