proms go bad ?

added a G3 zif adapter from moates to my 7747 about a week ago. burned a chip and placed in zif carrier. locked it in. all is well for 2 days. after driving car on 6 occasions 100 miles last week at idle in parking lot the car apparently goes limp mode, check engine light flashes, and apparenly goes super rich. i assumed it is the eprom fit in adapter so turned car off and removed and reinstalled chip and made sure locked in. problem went away. anyone have any issues with that adapter and placement of eprom(2732) ?

bend the pins out sliighly on the chip and use a chip installer tool to insert them into the ZIF and once in the ZIF make sure it seats correctly..

Loose fitting pins usuaully show up once in the ZIF and "locked" in place u can still wiggle the chip a little bit . Should lock in pretty solid...

I love chip burning when the weather goes from 70 to 30 lol

least once a week i willl get that in at least one of my cars lol

later

something does not make sense to me. i have a chip insertion tool. i thought i could toss it since i now have a zif. i assume the same zif as on my pp2? just drop prom in in and flip lever flat? not that it makes any difference but zif lever is to right as is my notch in eprom. are you suggesting the chip is not inserted fully into socket? maybe 1/2 way in ? i thought the insert was effortless. clue me in ! OBTW. the pins on eprom are straight as can be.

Chips can be damaged and continue to work for a while, and even thru a few read write cycles.

Static electricity can kill or weaken one.

Removing it when it's still being read, can weaken it. When you go key off, the IAC resets, and the prom can be being read for 10 secs after key off. Flip the key off, pull the prom, and eventually it will fail, always let the prom finish being read before removing it.

HTH.

Oops...I haven't been doing that with my 29C256. Maybe I should start doing it.

Ask Moates how many, and how often I was buying the 29C256s.

It was with those that I first saw, and then later figured out what was going on.

I have two of them. One I KNOW works well. The other has only been burned a few times and works well AFAICT. I'll definitely start pulling them out after a 10-sec period from engine shutoff.

are you suggesting after reburn a few times on a specific chip it should be tossed and a new one used? i have 8 chips and i rotate them. each chip 3-4 burns on it so far.

When you don't include any of what you're repling too it makes it hard to figure out what you're repling to.

In theory they should be good for 10,000+ write cycles.

thank you for that response. that ans my question. whenever the chip is removed vehicle has been "ign off" for over an hour so i dont elieve i have damaged prom. i dont think i have static electricity as damp environment. moates suggested possibly the ecu to zif or the eprom to zif was the issue. i believe that was the problem. thanks again.

I had a chip go south while I was driving. The car had been going in and out of limp home mode for a couple of minutes before it went totally south. I thought the chip was loose untill I tried to read it and verify it and it came up half full of ff. I had the ecm laying out where the sun could cook it. My guess is that the suns UV rays erased the chip slowly. It also erased my backup chip that was in the clear case laying beside my ecm. Go figure. A quick burn and I was back on the road. You wouldn't believe how much fuel your car can pump through itself in 5 miles while in limp home mode. It took a good 2 minutes of reving the hell out of my motor to get all the carbon blown out of it.

you know i never had considered the "sun" effect on erasing the data. it is in sun(how much hard to say from 900 am to 530 pm in parking lot but i dont park in same direction each time. very possible that could affect it. same location from day one 7/03 and all last summer. i used to coverr ecu with towel and will restart that practice. BUT the car did start and run fine after removal and reinstall in ecu. i i am concerned it will fail on xway. havenet drive since since 10 days of rain and car #2 had to be serviced so drove that to work. maybe tomorrow back on road.
