problem with laptop and cable..again

I have an IBM 760e laptop that i am trying to use for logging etc. In previous years I had used my older and much slower Compaq laptop and it worked fine with my cable, but this one has Infrared and all these other features that seem to be messing with the Com ports, and i have to change the setting in Moates software to com2(what the serial is listed in device manager) but, it does not work at all no matter how many times I try it. The only thing that has changed since the last time I hooked up the laptop/cable was that i burned a prom. At first I thought it was my cable because it didnt work on the old laptop anymore either, but I have a new cable that my buddy let me borrow that he uses on his MAF car. This one also does not work with the old compaq or the IBM. Could i have done something in the prom that would not allow it to link. anyone have any idea what i should do? I tried IBM but I still havent gotten a reply.

Did you look in the set-up options and select the correct ECM you have in the car?

I also am pretty sure the MAF cars needed a 10k OHM resistor across terminals A and B on the ALDL port. But if you have the correct cable to use with the moates logger then it should already have that 10k OHM resistor in-built in the cable.

Other then that I can't think of anything else.

yesi double checked the setting in Moates software and it was set to the 165 ecm, and the cable has the resistor.

You might also want to try and open the DB9 connectors and check to see if all the terminal connections are intact. One of my cable wires came loose once and that was the problem.

Double check the cable first with a continuity/ohmmeter.

After that, on your laptop (I also own a 760ELD that I use to do "cheap laptop" tests with TunerPro), disable the infrared (you won't use it). YOu can do this by opening the device manager, finding the infrared port(s), right click, and select "Disable".

Also recognize that moates' software prefers to be run in DOS. You may just want to try booting to DOS from a diskette and then loading the software.
