new to scanning -> knock absence

Hi guys,

I just received a usb to aldl cable from moates.net this week and tried out the TunerPro RT software (looks very nice) to scan my ecm. I've done some reading up on sensor output and I plan on spending a bit of time everyday learning more about engine operation so I can get into prom burning down the road.

However I've noticed I'm not getting any knock counts except when the car first starts up. Scanning yesterday I got one count upon startup. Before driving home from work today (30 minute drive) upon startup the count went from 0 to 165 then the entire trip it did not change even when I did a few WOT pushes.

My base timing is set at 6* and at idle the timing reads around 16* with the scanning software. The reason I ask if this is normal is because about 2 years ago I was having a problem with the SES light coming on under hard acceleration (code 43) and the car's performance dropping significantly until I restarted the car. I alleviated this problem by retarding the timing a bit and the SES light never came back.

If this could be the cause of my poor gas mileage then I would be very happy to fix it. If anyone can lend some insight I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

P.S. I come from a C programming background so I'm pretty eager to get into the programming aspect after I learn a bit from data logging and reading.

Could be a problem, but then agian it might not be, especially if your not running much timing. If it still passes the forced knock then its probably still working. If your not sure you could always replace the sensor. If the ecm either sees alot of knock or none at all when it performs the test then itll set the code 43 and max out the retard.

matlock, we should have an EFI powwow sometime this summer. I've got all the equipment, I think it would be fun to get together to bs about tuning.

When you're scanning, what kind of spark advance are you seeing?

I finally got around to doing a couple tests on my knock sensor from some tests described on this board. When doing the voltage test with the ignition to the on position and the wire unplugged, I got a reading of 12.1 volts. When doing the resistance test I got a reading of 100K ohms.

I've read that for some years they should be getting 4-6 volts and 3900 ohms. Could I possibly have the wrong knock sensor?

I tried scanning when running 89 octane and I received no knock at all. If anyone can lend me more information before I try replacing parts, that would be awesome. Thanks.

BTW, EFI POWWOW has already been used, and is registered with the authorities at CSH, HQ.
Continuing to use this name in an unauthorized way, will result in the powers to be at CSH, HQ, having a Pepsi, and not losing any sleep over it.

Consider yourself warned.........

You have the right sensor for a 165 ECM, it is expecting 100k.

Edit: PS. Sorry Grumpy. :P

Thanks Alex. So the sensor should be good? Is there any way to test the ESC module?

We should have an efi p*ww*w sometime, but I'm afraid that I'm still very new to it all. I'm logging my scans and when I play them back after I'm not sure what is good/bad/normal/etc.

Good question, I don't know. But if you want to borrow/buy my ESC, PM me. I don't need it anymore since I swapped to the '730.

Do you hear any audible knock? If not, then maybe you aren't getting any knock.

If you are really knocking and the sensor is not picking it up, you'll hear it if it's anything you need to adjust.

Quick question --

I measured my knock sensor from center pin to metal housing @ 110k. I went into a parts store and asked for a knock sensor for a 91 LO3 and it measured 100k. So...a lot of the posts on this site state 3.9k is the proper reading. What is it for the LO3 ('8746)? Is it 3.9k or 100k?

100K should be the right value for an L03 sensor... The 3.9K ones are for the speed density TPI ecms... (730)
