Need help with a 355 and big cam
Need help with a 355 and big cam
I need a lot of assitance from the board. I have installed a 350tpi into a camaro that used to have a 305 in it. I am using the stock 165 ECM and have purchased the prominator to help with the programming. I am a newbie to programming but I am more that willing to learn. I am running 24# ford racing injectors, a TPIS ZZ9 cam, World Sportsman II heads, and a roller rocker setup. I thought I would be able to use a stock 350 chip as a starting point to program, however the engine won't idle, and the ecm will not go into closed loop. I have read Traxion's article about programming and it seems that closed loop is the first step to achieve before scanning and adjusting values.
I guess my hope is that someone may have a setup similar to mine and may share some insight (if not a bin file) to get me on the right track. If more accurate descriptions of my mods are needed I can attach those as well.
Any help or remarks are appeciated.

My car used to run resonable well with heads ands zz9 with stock prom.
I would imagine it should run decent being the zz0 is a pretty small cam, maybe a little to rich with the 24 lb'ers and stock prom..
If you may need a heated 02 sensor if running headers not allowing car to reach closd loop.
You may also need to open throttle blades some and reset TPS if to far off.

I am running 1-3/4" headers. However I only have the origional o2 sensor off of my 305 that I am running. If I allow the car to heat up enough is it still necessary to buy the heated o2 sensor. I figured I could use what I have for now until I get the programming a little more stable. It does not idle well at all (not reaching close loop has me a bit concerned).

They are only $45 or so at advance. bosch 13077 is a good number, but any 3 or 4 wire will work.. When you wire it up the 2 white wires can be wired any way long as 1 is pos and other is ground.
Like I said, try opening throttle blades some and restart car to make it idle..

Thanks i'll give that a try. Did you find you had to modify the stock program significantly. I am running a MAF system and I was under the inpression that only a few tables would require adjusting for initial programming. Is that true??
It should not need to much at all, you may need to do a Inj. constants change for 24 lb injectors and some lower maf table tuning. But see where you are first.
I put a part number above for you for sensor if you did not see after edit.

Hi Northern-tpi,
I just have installed a new heated O2 this morning. I have installed the AC Delco “AFS-74” because according RBob he has got the best results. I have bought from E-Bay.
Quote RBob:
“This is a GM sensor that is tuned to the GM ECM PID fueling algorithm”
The part number is: 25312179 (AFS-74) and the counter weather-pack connector is: 12126012.
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...t=AFS74+sensor
On my first test today I have measured from 4 mv. till 959 mv. And it went to close loop after 160 sec.
I did install with a relay and connected to the CCP wire (DK GRN/ YEL, A3 connector of the ECM) but the relay is a chip and make a lot of noise, so I need to change for a heavy duty one (noise free).
Don’t forget that in the EPROM is a timer for Close loop and it is 160 sec.
87_TA is right; you need to change the injector constant.
APIP for manual or ARAP for an A/T will be the best BIN to start, the spark advance from the ARAP is aggressive compared to the APIP.

Thanks Cobra289,
Seems like you are helping me out a lot lately - greatly appreciated. I have phoned the Delco Parts dealer in town and I can get the 25165312 for $65 CDN. I figure that is alright. However is there that much of a difference between this sensor and the 25312179 that you are using??? Plus what is involved with setting up the relay. Is it required or are there other alternatives for installing it???
Once again thanks for your help

“We need to help each other” that is the big rule of the DIY-PROM forum.
The part number that you mention should be OK because it was also mentioned by RBob. I don’t know how much is a CDN $ but I pay $32 US by E-Bay (AC Delco Boxed) but it will take some time.
The relay set-up was posted by “Vader” and has to do with the constantly heated situation when you connect to a 12v in run and doing in this way it is only heated when the ECM energize the CCP. The rest of the time it will get enough heat from the exhaust.
See the attachment from “Vader”

That is great. I think I understand now. One more question - you mentioned that you are going to be putting in another relay (one that is not as noisy). Can I ask what you will be using instead. I guess if I am going to the Delco dealer I may as well pick up the correct relay as well.

I have no idea witch relay should I use. I hope that a parts dealer will help me. The only one AC Delco dealer that we have here in Holland does not sell to private persons. (Bad thing) However, we have here OPEL that is the European GM, maybe they will help me.
Remember I drive a Cobra with thing dash board and the relay is located after this thing dash, so every time the relay is energized start to rattle. I did have tested a second one from the same make, but it did the same. the relay that I use looks very small and chip and it is not an equivalent of the AC Delco rock solid ones.

Cobra
