I am just gettin started as well. Got the Pocket Programmer II from www.xtronics.com ? for about $150. Decided to do the EEPROM thing to avoid having to buy an eraser. They are $6 each from Craig Moates vs. around $4 or less from component suppliers. You can get them cheaper from other computer or chip suppliers, but the adaptor and ZIF from craig are a good idea and you will save on additional shipping from the other source. Editing programs are up to you to decide on. You read the intro posts so you know all about that. Good luck! I can't wait until my motor is finished so I can start to do the whole DIY PROM thing!

I'm in a similar situation....building a TPI350 for my 40-year-old Jeep and planning on using it as a test mule for teaching myself to tune. I just got my laptop (today actually...killer deal too) and will be ordering the AutoProm from Craig next week. It looks like a real nice peice of equipment and it will pretty much do it all....read, emulate, datalog, and burn. The only thing it can't do is erase UV chips. I personally will not be using UV chips anyway so it doesn't matter.

If you're only going to be working with one vehicle, I'd take a good long look at the PROMinator. It's cheaper than the AutoProm, and has built-in bank-switching capabilities. Plus you don't ever have to actually "burn" a chip. You just click a couple times to upload the tune to the PROMinator, and that's it. Instant gratification. The only catch is that you can't use it to tune 2 seperate vehicles.
