Spark knock and timing at WOT.

Well I went to the track sunday for some more bracket racing with my IROC. I been taking out timing to cut down on spark knock, but I still have it. I am down to about 20 deg advance at WOT in upper rpms, and the WB shows AFR in range of 12.0-12.4. Most of the knock is while I am in 1st gear, and the counts went up to about 46, with retard about 8deg. But it is much less knock than I used to get, since I been doing my own chips.

I talked to a fellow corvette racer at the track, and he says i most likely have false knock. Said to get rid of the stock knock sensor, (or bypass) it, and replace it with less sensitive unit. Or the other option would be to give it more timing in the chip, and limit the max knock retard to like 4-5 deg. He said I should be in the 30s for full advance at WOT. So know I am totally confused.

My ETs, and trap speeds aren't getting any better, even with the 3.73 gears. I ran my best ET with 2.77 gears and an ADS chip in there, before I started burning. The ADS chip had about 26-28 deg timing. But I think the spark knock counter was high back then.

Need some help, I guess.

I had the same problem in my '91 GTA.

The car always used to throw Code 43, so I just figured it was a faulty knock sensor and never got around to putting in a new one before I traded it.

It had the same problem up top even though I pulled it down to like 23*.

Wow. This is some good reading. Thanks guys. I think I might be getting somewhere.

Background info: I am running a scan tool from EASE Diagnostics. It is a commercially available tool, which can scan any 82-95 GM w/OBDI ecm. I have seen that 10k mode before, on other vehicles, and it does make the engine run different.
Right now I am connecting with a signal set called "A028B10k". That is the only choice for my car. (1988 165ecm with MAF, 350 tpi). This gives me the 8192 baud rate that I need. I wonder if the 10k resistor is still in there with EASE? Like others who post with EASE, I see the total spark advance w/TDC equal to what I command in the tables at WOT.

But also there is that constant SA adder for ALDL (10k mode ). So looks like I should start looking there first. Also might have to ask EASE if they disable the 10k mode after I connect.

When I first started using the scan tool from EASE, i had lots of problems connecting up, and staying connected. They have helped me out, and updated thier product.

The plot thickens.......
