Spark retard issue

I have MAF setup and am having trouble with spark retard. Installed new shortie headers. I disconnected the knock sensor and am still getting spark retard at throttle. Sometimes up to 12*. What else could cause this if not the knock sensor? Could it be a bad MAF? It seems with some datalogging that when throttle is applied the maf readings go up and so does the spark retard. They seem to be related somehow.
