innovated LM-1 question

For those of you with the LM-1 I have a question. Can it datalog other inputs just with the base unit or do you have to buy the $250 aux box thing?

There's a $99 analog input box (or cable I think it's called) too. There's also an RPM pickup that you can clip over a spark plug wire - a few bucks more - $20 I think. But, I don't think you need that - I think you can hook a wire into the either the EST, REF, or Tach signal, or maybe even the Coil itself - just ask Innovate on that one.

I built my own interface to the LM-1. I used voltage to frequency converter IC's to interface RPM and MPH. I used the reluctor signals from the VSS and ESC module to the PCM. I then just tapped into the TPS, CTS and MAP sensors, referenced it to the LM-1 5V and common and put it on a project PCB and box from Rat Shack, connected it to a 7-pin Mini Din connector. After programming the inputs of the LM-1, it works great. It cost me about $25 in parts and a couple hours work. If you can follow a schematic and solder, it is a small project. I would be willing to share it if anyone is interested.

HaulinA$$,

Would you by chance have the part numbers and where you got for the potentiometers you used in these. I am assuming they must be the smaller ones that you use a screwdriver on since I cannot really see them in the picture you have of it.

Thanks again

This is a touch off topic but does anyone know how to export the log into CSV or any other spreadsheet format?

O.K. they are little trimmer potentiometers. The following part numbers will work fine.

Digi-Key P.N., Desc., Price

490-2377-ND Trimmer pot, 20K, 12 turn $1.14
490-2378-ND Trimmer pot, 200K, 12 turn $1.14

You can get them at http://www.digikey.com

Made the circuit for about $18 from local electronics store (Ace electronics in Houston). Works great.

You've got mail. I would be happy to post this on the DIY-EFI ftp page, but I can't get it to upload. I am a sbuscriber to the lists but when I try to upload, I get a message saying I don't have permission to upload. If someone could help me do this it would be much appreciated.

Finally getting around to building this I have a question on the schematic though. The way it shows the pots wired does not make sense. Is it supposed to have the wire from chip to the varing portion and then one lead to ground and the third lead of pot unused? With the way it shows now the voltage from the chip going in to the pot would cancel out going through varing portion of pot. Hope this is making sense what I am trying to say.

Thanks Chris

Does it look like this:

Code:
chip |
| >
-------- <
         >
         <
         |
         _
         -
         .
Then that's probably ok *if* the chip is expecting a resistance to ground.

Edit: Hmm maybe I'll get you more confused with my bad diagram.

Nope diagram has chip where you have it and then also to top of resistor in your diagram.

Ok, that should be fine. They're using it as a variable resistor, in a slightly different way.

The pots are wired as rheostats (variable resistors) as AlexJH posted. The circuit will work fine as shown and with 10 or 20 turn pots, the adjustment won't be too touchy.

I posted the file on the Moates.net FTP site in the "misceleneous uploads" section (it worked this time). Here is the link. Enjoy!

I'm not an electronics guy by any means but if they are rheostats then you would only need two of the three legs on the potentiometer. Now based on diagrams ALEXJH put up the variable resistor picture is wired opposite of what the schematic shows?? Sorry for confusion I just want to solder this once and make sure it is correct.

It works both ways. But the resistance will be different between them, since with the 3 leads connected, you will have current flowing through the full length of the resistor (a fixed value) in parallel with the variable part.

Heck, if it doesn't work, just clip one of the leads.

I am an electronics guy. Trust me, it will work as I drew it in the schematic.

Ok, I have a friend who is helping me and he is the one who brought this up to me. Thanks for the help everyone we'll wire it the way it is shown. I kind of wondered since no one else seemed to say there was anything wrong.

Thanks again
