ECU swap question

I have an 88 GTA which originally came with a 305 engine and a 5spd trans. The car now has a 350 motor tpi and the 5spd and is running the original computer. I have a computer out of an 88 vette but it's for an auto. Wil this computer work?

It will work ok (provided all the pinouts are the same). But, its not set up for a stick and the shift light will come on all the time because the computer will think its working the torque converter clutch.

Not only will the Vette computer work, its the same. Part number 1227165 or possibly a more recent part numbered equivalent. The problem is that neither memcal is what you want. You could erase and reprogram either one, or buy some spare chips and keep your original. Remove the cover on the side of the ECM and you'll see the big blue rectangle- thats the memcal. Pop off the blue cover (after you remove the whole memcal from the ECM) and you will see a large eprom at one end. Thats the one that needs to be reprogrammed. As far as I know, GM didnt produce a 5.7 (350) with a manual trans in a third gen. The Vette program (called a bin) may have too much timing as they used aluminum heads. The Vette bin may make a good start though.

Forgot about the alum heads part. I know someone who was using a manual behind a vette motor and ecm he swapped in and he didnt have too many complaints about it, although he did say it couldve used some work.
