16050021 ecm prominator?

I'm doing an tpi swap in a 71 truck and would like to use the prominator setup to eliminate the chip mess.

The setup i have is from a mid 80's MAF 305

the only relevant number on the ecm case I can see with the barcode is 16050021

will this work with the prominator stuff? which one do I order? or do I need to go in search of the newer ecm?

That number doesn't ring any bells, with me. Is there a memcal, or just a chip holder, holding the chip in. Can you read the 4 letter code off of whatever chip is in there?.

You'd be alot further ahead, IMO, to repin the harness to use a later ecm. And if you do that, might as well go with a 1227730 like the 90-92 ones used.

Just reporting what the info was, that I got.

My pal Doc, has a decoder ring, for doing that sort of stuff, and a Snap-On Prom Book Catalog.

Above the panel above the passengers feet, mounted vertically. A search here will lead to a few sites where guys have made the change. Now with a 730, and a Prominator, you'd be state of the art.

Your Welcome.

The reason he is saying to go to the later computer is that it's much faster, more tuning information is available for it, and you eliminate the MAF sensor which makes for easier custom installations. Your harness can be modified to fit, you can do it yourself, or you can send it any number of places to have it repinned for the later model computer.

If you are going to leave the engine totally stock, use what you have, just get an ADS chip or an IROC-Z chip for the 85 870 computer. The stock Berlinetta and Z-28 chips that year stunk!!!! I speak from experience!!!! Of course there was a recall on the coil and chip for my 85 Z28, not so with my 85 IROC-Z.

One other consideration, the smaller chip is called a Cal-Pak. It contains information like vehicle weight and gear ratios on it. Try to get one at the dealer that is for a final drive as close to what you will be running as possible.

Prices:

Large Chip $50 at the dealer, ADS, $75 and not enough difference to justify the difference in cost, but waaaaaaaay superior to the stock chip. Go with the street chip if you buy it.

Small chip: Dealer only $15-$20 last time I checked but that was four or five years ago.

If you are going to soup things up substantially, don't even fool around, go with the latest and greatest as described by Grumpy. But consider a prominator in place of the chip.....
