what do you guys use to datastream

i am completely new to this PROM thing so bear with me. i am wondering what you guys use to watch the ECM while you drive so you know what changes to make? the only thing i can think of to describe what i am talking about would be a tech II scanner which i am sure many of you are very familiar with. i am just wondering how you guys know what needs changed, and once a chip is burnt, how do you know if it helped or not. what do you guys use to see what is goin on with the engine? i have access to chips and a programmer. i am in the process of getting an old laptop and some software. i am assuming you guys buy or make a cable that plugs into the ALDL and plugs into your computer, and there is then software available to read the datastream??

as you guys can see from my sig, my car needs a different chip. thanks for your help.

Yup, I use Craig Moates scanning software. Links to it are in the stickies at the top of this page.
