You didn't post what ECM, year or type of motor so it makes it difficult to give specifics.
There IS a pin from the ECM that carries the data. You must run a wire from that along with a power and a ground to a communication "cable" that you can make or buy.
It's just a matter of figuring out which pin it is and making the connections as needed.
You don't have to install the whole port. Just the wires to make the data line work.

Well.....

One could find the correct wiring diagrams for your car that refer to the ECM and find the ALDL data line out. Typically 730/165 ECMs are Pin A8 or A9.

I don't see why a installer that had half a clue would move or hide the ALDL port.

Would that call for a point reduction in a IASCA competition? It should! Most annoying thing for me as a tech is to have to remove a trailer brake controller, etc to pull codes/datastream info on a truck. /soapbox

What year, engine, etc is your car?

Just as a double check the ALDL port on this car would be under the dash above and in front of the fuse box. Drivers side, far to the left, almost hidden.

Else pick up pin A8 on the ECM. Passenger side up under the dash on a velco'd slide mount.

Only if something to do with the audio system, then yes it could be cause for a deduction.

I got out in 95.. I saw no reason what fishtanks and neon had to do with sound.

Damn I miss the discount thru Fosgate.. lol
