ecm capabilities

can the tbi equipted cars ecm control a mpfi system? if so can it only do batch fire or can I adapt it to do sequential?

I am working on a mpfi 383 for my next ride but havent found out if I can use a tbi ecm, tpi ecm, or if I have to go with an aftermarket ecm.

Edelbrock has a mpfi kit that looks like it operates off of the tbi ecm, but, I dont know if their intake and tb will be adequate for a 475 hp motor. it is designed for tbi cars but it looks to have the 2bbl tbi layout with the mpfi fuel rails. I am looking to go with the 4bbl tb on a 4bbl intake with mpfi fuel rails.

any advise???

Similar setup, I'm going with a 7730 ecm and diy prom and a Holley stealth ram.
Unless you are going to use a carb as a TB and welding up your own injector bungs. The HSR is the cheapest all new route to go. You can pc it togethor cheaper than a kit if you shop and use an 7730.
You can mix in used/ebay parts and get it even cheaper.
check out for all sorts of info.
HSR.com
If you have a tbi ecm, it's not that much $ for another ecm and there are advantages to going to the 7730.

Yes, but using a TPI ecm would better serve you.
There's only one SEFI ecm for a OBDI V8, and no one seems to even want to bother with it. Batch fire will do everything you want, for 60 PPH injectors and smaller.

You're going to have to read up, and see what best suits you.

If you're going with a port setup, might was well use a port type ecm.

Which one is that Grumpy? The only ODBI ecm's I've seen have been used with the Buick 3.8 V6's, and only have 6 outputs for injectors.

The 2240.
It's the one that goes with the Caddie dual sensor distributor (90, or 91, I think it is).

thanks grumpy. that pretty well answers my question.

I am a newbie to tuning fi setups and am wanting to learn more but it appears to be a steep learning curve. I am a quick learner though. maybe I can get by.

how great of a disadvantage is batch vs sequential? I have thought about using a tpi vehicle but wasnt sure if it would put me any further ahead cash wise considering the diff. in cost of the vehicles. (around here everyone seems to think tpi is far superior to tbi therefore mark them up more )

I would like to be able to tune for performance and fuel economy. I know "they dont go hand in hand." but if i see guys running 400+cid 500+hp and still getting around 20 mpg, I would like to try myself. call me crazy???

In some cases Batch is better then SEFI. With huge injectors you can get a better idle with SEFI. I have 60 PPH injectors on my 231 CID engine, and can run batch fire, just fine.

TBI gets tricky for more then about ~350 using oem parts.

What's crazy about that?.
