SES light on, but no codes?

So after all the crap thats been going on with my car in the data logging department, I decided to take my car out for a little cruise.

Well, strangely enough, my SES light was on when I was pulling out of the parking lot. So I stop the car and attempt to pull codes with the good ole paperclip. What do I get? NOTHING.

I don't even get a code 12. How could my SES light even be on if I don't get a code 12? The car is running fine, no real issues. It is idling much higher than it usually does, like its stuck in open loop.

Argh! This is driving me nuts.

Ok, I just tried it with a different computer. Same thing, SES light, can't pull codes, and idles real high.

did you backprobe each sensor and make sure they are within range(key on/ engine off)?

no.. but I should at least throw a code 12 if I attempt to pull the codes.

Make sure u dont have any grd issues.

the ones on the pass top of the cyl head are notorious for doing many dumb things.

Like computer resets, false codes, etc....

Just something to double check..............

That's not acurate. Everything from a no start to idle flare can be caused by a faulty sensor.

Other than that, if my prom chip is faulty there will be no code 12.....

Hmm... well I tried 2 different chips also, so I am not sure that is it either.

However, 3.8 TransAm might be on to something. Bad grounds and electical issues are the story of my car's life. 2 months ago I redid nearly every ground in the car (That I can find, I have no idea where the stock locations are). I am not sure I did anything to the ground at the firewall.

I will have to go back over my grounds again and see whats up. For some reason that seems like the most logical problem when it is dealing with my car.

electrical issues don't just go away, they create car fires later on. Get a good wiring diagram. Just moving the ecm should never cause your problem(unless it's something inside the car). You can test all the ecm grounds with a volt meter.....

Good luck.

Well.. this is how the story goes...

I've been planning on swapping to the 730ECM for a while. I had nearly everything that I needed in order to do it, I was just lacking the time or paitence to do it.

A little whlie later, my car with the 165ECM just completely died. I was pretty positive it was the ECM because I could not pull any codes at all. I tried everything that I know of to make it work, it just wouldnt. Thinking it was my time to upgrade to the 730, I did.

The upgrade went perfectly smooth, I burned what chips I needed to burn and got the car runnning with the 730 without any major problems.

Fast forward 2 weeks from that upgrade and my car just stalls out again. Just like it did with the 165. It ended up doing this a couple times. With enough fiddling, I was able to fire up the car again and take it to a friend's house. From there, we went over what grounds we can find, thinking it was a grounding problem, or some sort of wiring issue. From that date on, the car has been running absolutuly perfect. No problems at all, and very reliable.

That was, until a couple days ago. I found that my lights were staying on in my car, even when I turned them off and took the key out. I thought it was a switch, and the only way that I could turn the lights off was if I pulled the fuse. I eventually did find out what the culprit was, and that was that. (Couple of wires that were touching that shouldn't have been). I think whatever that was, may have caused my problem to begin with.

I checked all the fuses, and everything seems ok on that front. Nothing blew, but I guess a ground may have gotten hot or something and is now causing my current issue.

It doesn't end with my car. If I could just get a new harness, I would, but thats out of the question. I really need to invest in a Fluke.

I figured it out..

Apparently something wasn't right with my ZIF socket. Even though I remounted it and the chip multiple times. I replaced the ZIF socket and the SES light went away.

Seems like the car is running alright now.
