Vortec 383 first start

Thought you were going to see something great in here when u saw this post didnt you? :-)

Its alive and idles amazingly well. Even pegging the BLM at 108 since its never been run before.

Idle is baby butt smooth at 600rpm in gear and roughly 700ish in park.

My total changes to the prom were basic, I lowered the fan temps to what I usually run and set the inj. constant and the cc/cyl and am now proceeding from there.(other dumb stuff like rev limiter, etc was set up also)

Ran it for 35 minutes since it was the first start up.

Off to change the oil and double check the FP is at 43psi and start working on some lower VE fueling to make it not puke gas :-)

Will update this post as I have more info.

Heh

383TransAM?

I dont think so, not when I have a 232? v6 with a 210/210 500 lift roller cam with champion intake and heads, along with a big neck intercooler(thanks bruce) , PT-67 turbo and a Vigilante in the TTA :-)

But since the motor for my Formula was built as a low compression, 8.67 - 1 engine it might challenge the TTA when I get the hair dryer setup running in the next yr or two :-)

Dieing to get started on the tuning aspects of this sure to be fun machine. But first things first. Its all new, engine, brakes, suspension, rear. So t'rows duties consist of making the idle, low end ve into the 120's and giving the car a thourough once over to make sure everything is okay and another brake bleed :-)

I'm hoping to be actively tuning/driving it by Fri nite or early sat as long as I can make it driveable and get her aligned.

I plan on updating this post as I get the tune sorted/worked out.

Engine specs are:
383
vortec heads
crane 216/221 w/ 1.6 rr's(lift near/at .500)
8.67 compression
vortec tpi base(ported)
slp runners(ported)
slp headers and catback
vigilante converter

Its a 91 Formula so it is the 730 $8D of course

and WOW is a 600rpm idle in gear awesome compared to what it was with the old hotcammed 350

Good to hear that it's running. That's always a relief to go through start-up with no hic-up's.

Did the cam change make that big of a differance or was it the combination of cam change and going to a larger cu. in. ?

Congrats on the startup. What's the oil pressure at 600rpm?

Oil pressure on startup is roughly 80psi :-)

About 50-60 hot :-)

Has a Milidon deep sump and a high volume pump

Was building it to bever break even when it becomes boosted.

All blm from idle to 4000rpm are from 120-128. Spent the morning doing runs and using VeMaster and it worked great(wish i had done this sooner)

Went to emissions, ala IM 240 style and was granted a fast pass on the first try! :-) (i lost the datamaster file though, wanted to record it but i fubar'ed)

This car has tested cleaner than anything else I have owned/built/tuned thus far.

HC were .27 on .80 allowed and CO was .00 on 15 allowed and the Nox(not tested here but read) was 1.1 on 2.5 allowed, and yes this was on a treadmill(IM-240)

Car is catalyst equipped(till i swap the pipe on) and has no working egr, 8.67 compression, is a 383 and has a mild 216/221 cam, and no AIR system, and a one wire non heated GM o2 :-)

Have some mileage updates.

Put it this way, I didnt have a lot of time.

Started on Fri, swapped GM dissie in on Sun, minimal tuning for emisisons(roller) on Mon. emission test and plates on Teus.

Break in? Wedns on the way to Bowling Green for the Buick Nats. (roughly 800mile roundtrip)

On the way down on a conservative and slightly rich tune I averaged 20.5 and 21 mpg per tank. Was doing anywhere from 55 to 80(crusie on) as the motor only had 130 miles or so on it.

On the way home I managed 21.45mpg with a little more tweaking of fuel and timing in a lot more windy environment and the windows completely down. This was using the cruise, including the Appalachian mountains and avg. in the 72-76mph range depending on traffic.

I still have more tweaking to go as well as getting the engine fully broken in. I have not yet touched nor invoked highway mode yet as I was worried about running a new engine lean just yet.

Just curious Jer, do you have any MPG and emission numbers from the 355 hotcam setup?

Emissions on the hot cammed 350 were a little higher in HC and had some CO as well.(383 has tested cleaner than any others I have done thus far)

Been too long and I dont have exact numbers anymore. With a decent tune and good converters it should be made to easily pass emissions though.

Mileage wise, when it was still a good engine (been a long time) it hit 23mpg on the highway without using highway mode.

My avg was usually 18.5-20mpg combined about 50/50 split
