I am no pro but, it seems that the #1 clear differance is the 749 has a PH driver

749 in stock form will only do P+H if wired as a turbo sunbird -- IOW only running one injector per driver, for a total of two. If running PFI, like in the sy/ty apps, it needs high-z injectors, although there is a DIY mod to upgrade the drivers for low-z, that can be found here with a search.
Besides that, the only practical difference that I'm aware of between the two ECMs that I know of is that the 749 has an additional output that could be used for something like a wastegate solenoid. If you use an external WG controller, and don't need P+H, there's no advantage to the 749 over the 730 that I know of.

749 can use up to 6 p/h without any mods, wired like the sunbird, if you going for 8 p/H you need to upgrade the drivers...
This is the only reason I'm switching to a -749, going to run 8 p/H.....
