please fill me in on first time use.
windows XP
customefis ALDL cable
RS serial to USB adapter(used successfully in winALDL)
1. i connect ALDL cable to car and laptop
2. start TP RT 4.0
3. set TP RT 4.0 to Com port 1(same as winALDL)
4. turn on ign to run position.
now in addition to that i believe to use the aldl function i need to load into TunerPro RT an xdf file to use datalogging feature? If so do i locate a suitable .bin file in Tunercat and simply rename it with .xdf instead of .bin ?? and drop it into TP RT 4.0?
i understand i need to select an ECU( is 7747 adequate or is the full number required(1227477)?
the baud rate in winALDL is set to 2400 (for me). i understand i need to set TunerPro 4.0 to 4800 or it automatically is already set up that way.
any startup tips appreciated.

To create an XDF, go to XDF --> Import --> from ECU, and select the correct ECU for your car. Then you can open a .bin and edit the data. But all this is for changing the values in the .bin, not datalogging.
No, you don't need to load a .bin or .ecu or .xdf to datalog, but you do need to go to Tools --> Datalogging --> Setup to select the .ads file for your car (which is the datastream definition)
Once you've selected the correct .ads, click 'connect to ECM'. Oh, and cross your fingers. I can only get it to connect to my '165 computer ('86 Iroc) about 1 in 20 tries. On the other hand, it will connect to my '730 (91z) every time.

I don't know if this is true for TunerPro RT or other scanners with the 165 ECM, but I have had problems getting and staying connected to the ECM with my scan tool Turbo-link.
One thing I have found to minimize the problem is to connect the cable to the ALDL and computer port before I power up the computer and with the key off. Then turn the key to on but do not start the car, then power up the PC wait for all start up routines to run, then open scan tool application, connect to the ECM, then start the car.
This connects on the first try 99% of the time and reduces the 'lost communication with ECM' significantly.
