Cant get any data from ALDL
Hi everyone. Ive been working with my dad on his hot rod (it has a 5.7 TPI with MAP system.)
We were trying to figure out why it was running so rich then we discovered the ECM was in limp home mode. We replaced the ECM with a new 730 and here is what is happening.
When I plug my moates ALDL cable in I can move the selector to 'shorted' and the SES light will flash "1 2". However I cant seem to read any information from the ALDL. I tried WinALDL but I didnt see a setting for the 730, and none of the others worked. So I downloaded Datamaster for the 8D and its still not reading anything, any idea whats up here?
Also, I know the cable and COM settings are good as it reads data from my 165 ECM great.
Am I supposed to run the cable in open or shorted for datalogging? neither works. Im stumped, and he's pissed off, lol.

I use TunerPro with AutoProm. Worked fine for both '730/'749 ECMs. I am currently running $58 on a repinned '730 and can datalog with TunerPro all day long.

Hmmm...I thought that the free version did datalog, just not real time emulation. I could be wrong though. If you have a autoprom that you got from Moates, you should be entitled to a registered version of tunerpro...

you could try the RT and if you like it "pay the man"
I did think the std version would log data too, not sure.
Set up TP to use the "Max232" setting and be sure your com port is set correctly.
The other thing is to confirm you have the data coming out of pin in the ALDL.
Could be 1 of 2 possible pins. (M or E) IIRC.
some of the OBD1 cables have both pins connected, others only have one pin. You may be trying the wrong one.
You do not need to "short" into diagnostic mode to datalog a 730.
Not reading anything from DM is a clue that its not connected or the port is not right.

Don't know if this will help you, bit I struggled with a similar sounding problem for wuite a while. Turns out the pins in my connectors had expanede a bit and were no longer making a good connection. I ended up pulling them one at a time and squeezing them a bit with a pair of needle nose pliers.

hi i went through the same thing for three weeks, here are some ideas
get the RT version you need the right program for the baud rate
update the driver for the cable
change the knock sensor to a 91 92 (if it isn't already)
if the ecm locks make sure your not throwing a code 51,53 or 54
try reseting the ecm by removing the battery cable for 20 minutes
in RT change the setting for using high speed if usd detected
if the car was in an accident and the air bag went off get a reman ecm
just my two cents hope it helps, yes i pulled my hair out also!
