Help for getting started?
I've finally given up on trying to figure out this stuff on my own. Where would i get the ecu file for WinBin to match my cars ecm? And also what editor(s) do you recommend for someone getting started? Any special tuneing techniques, methods, etc that you recommend for someone just starting out? Sorry for the long post, but those few things have bothered me. Also what the heck do each of those symbols, etc mean in programs like winbin like %TPS, etc...any sites for that stuff?

Bran,
Have you been reading the posts on this board?
Heh heh ... there is an article entitled "Which is the best/preferred Prom editor program to use for the 85-89 (165) ECM?" which talks about the different editors. This also mentions the availability of the .ecu files. Fortunately there is a .ecu file for the '89. You can find it at...

It also seems as though you can download an evaluation copy of GMEPro with the 89 calibration file at...

Tuning techniques are things that you'll have to learn through your own research. Again - as I stated before - read through all of the websites listed in the PROM article. Then, search the internet. Subscribe to mailing lists. Download the gmecm archives and give it a good review. You need to put time into it ... there insn't a magic source for all information ... heh heh ... at least not yet
As far as the acronyms are concerned..

I read the article posted on the board, and i saw that i could make a cable for like diagnostics from laptop to my car, useing something like calmap to translate the data, is there an easier method to makeing that cable. The likelyness of me getting some of that stuff is next to me actually getting my dream 383. Heh...
