Can I keep TBI?
I currently have a 305 LO3 and I am thinking abou tbuilding a bad *** 350, but i still want to keep by TBI just because fuel injection is reliable and really dont want it to look like a hack up and fabricated job. My question is would a company like Hypertech, or JET be able to burn a chip for me so I could keep my TBI if I gave them all of the cam specs and so forth? Also I would put a Crane Cams TPI cam in it since a 350 can handle a higher valve lift, would this type of cam work with the new computer/TBI? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
You can still run TBI, but not the one that youre using right now. You need a 2" bore unit to handle the big power. The 2" GM big block truck unit will support about 400 hp.
Yes those companies can build you a custom chip and you are asking the right questions. I'd suggest that you do your own calibrations though. Those custom chips can get you close but they may take several tries. Its a lot of work but there is no substitute for a calibration that is done in the vehicle.
Cams: most manufacturers will want you to run a wide lobe seperation angle. 112-114 is best. They will tell you that they want the engine to make a minimum ammount of vacuum (depends on the company). This has an effect on the resolution of the fuel and spark tables. Contact the chip manufacturer for their specific requirements and reccomendations.
For reference, My car makes 9-10" of vacuum at my 6000 ft altitude and runs well without any kind of device to modify the map signal.
