What changes are made when ordering a custom chip?
I'm getting my Ed Wright chip tomorrow and I'm wondering what changes are made in designing a custom chip? I know the speed limiter is gone and timing and fuel are curves are changed. Will this allow me better use of the new cam? I was just wondering what I should also expect to be different. Thanks for the answers.
A cam change will change the vacuum signal to the map sensor. Lets say the before the cam change you were making 20" of vacuum at Idle and 15" at light throttle acceleration... when you install a larger cam, its making less vacuum at idle, say 15"... so now the computer thinks its at part throttle when its at idle. That vacuum signal is used for both the spark and fuel tables. So you see, its more than just the "curves" that matter if youve made a cam swap.
The calibration can also be modified for larger injectors if youve installed them.
On a stock calibration, a modified vehicle is never operating with the optimal spark and fuel, the custom calibration will optimize the way a modified vehicle runs under all circumstances. Improvements in power and drivability are larger with more modified engines. Small mods will see only small improvements.
