Cal Pack? What does it really do?

Huh? Does anyone really know? Does it do more than just control the limp home calibration? Just curious...

My understanding is it contains vehicle specific data... tranny type, type of emissions system, etc.

CALPAC does contain that stuff but it basically is there in case of a PROM meltdown. The CALPAC information (CALibration) will be used by the computer to get you home in limp-home mode. Therefore, if the CALPAC info is off by a large margin, as would happen if you susbstantially modify your engine, it will be difficult/imposible to drive home in limp home mode... but don't worry about it...

So, in theory, if you were to drive your car totally without it...You'd never notice the difference unless your PROM chip was bad?

im pretty sure it contains the information dan posted, especially pertinent is the number of cylinders the ecm is being used on
the 7747 was used on alot of stuff i think some 4 bangers and i know Alot of 6 bangers and im pretty sure that chip determines the number of cylinders

I'm not sure if you can or not. But I know I wouldn't try it...

I'm a little late replying to this, but I just remembered. I've had my IROC run in the limp-home mode before when I didn't have my ZIF socket soldered in good enough. I'm using an '87 350 memcal, but it runs my 305TPI good enough. Having only 22 degrees (or whatever it is) of total timing stinks, but at least it runs...
