TBI computer for 91 RS

Does anyone know if the chip from a 92/93 caprice TBI 350 will fit the computer in my 91 RS? ( I know the chip is different) I am swapping my 305 TBI for a 350 TBI (probably a caprice crate engine) and i thought I might be able to use the GM chip out of a caprice. Are the computers the same except for the chip? Thanks for the help....bob

The 92/93 350 Caprice uses ECM 16135320 or 16136965. Your car runs the 1228746 ECM. I doubt the 92/93 eprom will run in your ECM.

The 89/90 350 Caprice uses the 1228746 ECM. It's possible you could run the 89/90 eprom. I haven't tried it so I don't really know.

IMO, to really make everything right, you should get the 350 knock sensor and ESC module from the Caprice also.

Brent, thanks for the response. Nothing is easy, thats for sure. I was looking to run the 16220837 SEO chip from a 92/93 caprice.
How would I find out for sure if it would fit my ECM? This is stupid, but I gotta ask,
is changing the ECM a big deal? Does it involve a wiring harness? Thanks for the help...bob

The only way to find out is to buy it (the SEO eprom) and try it.

I don't know anything about the wiring for the 92-93 ECMs. The only way to find out is to get the wiring schematics for both your car and the 92-93 Caprice and compared them pin for pin.

Might be a very steep learning curve for ya, I don't know how much you know about ECM's EFI, wiring and electronics.

The easiest route for you IMO would be to try the 89/90 350 Caprice eprom.

Brent, thanks again. Steep learning curve is
a polite way to put it! I don't know jack about this stuff, other than what I have read here.thats why I want to stay with a stock chip...bob

Brent or anyone else, i noticed that the 1228746 ECM (91 TBI 305 F body), the 16135320 and the 16136965 ECM's (92-93 TBI 350 caprice) all run 2732 4 Kbyte E-proms.
So, why wouldn't an E-prom from a 16135320 or 16136965 ECM Work in a 1228746 ECM assuming the motor application was right?
(I know I can try it, but I don't want to do the swap and find out it doesn't work and have to end up with a custom chip that may or may not work)

I got just enough info to make a fool of myself but what do you or anyone elso think?....bob

The chip will fit physically, but the EPROM programming varies from ECU to ECU. There's a good number of ECU's that use the 2732 EPROM chips, each ECU type, however, has its own unique "program" on the chip.
