software frustration

I got my AKM serial cable the other day and assembled it per Andrews instructions. The frustration is I can't seem to make any of the software that I downloaded work. I have tried Carchat,Freescan and Craig Moates software work. I have a 165 ECU. I have followed all the instructions by am having no luck. I have put the 10K resitor across A an B on the ALDL but am still stuck. Has any one had this much trouble with diagnostic software? Any help would be greatly appretiated.

I guess you could say I've had SOME difficulty getting software to work...

What's the comm look like? Going through Comm-1? On my software, what are the 'Last Bytes Read'? Never links up & beeps? Tried it with another chip, maybe stock? Let me know how it goes, particularly with respect to details of comm attempts.

Craig, I havn't tried a stock chip yet but I will and let you know. I noticed on another post that you replied to that you mentioned suppling +5v to pin 6 on the serial cable. How do I do that? Is pin 6 on the db25 side the same as pin 6 on the db9 side?

Check your computer to be sure no other program is using your com-port. For example, a modem or another program can use the com port and that can prevent your software to get access to it. I've had that problem when I accidently ran Craig's software along with Paul Blackmore's CarBytes.

If you want to try your cable you can download Carbytes, use the ALDL-setting "echoed", and in the "Command" line, send $80,$56,$01. (with the 10k resistor)
If you get a 64 byte datastream back from the ECM your cable is in order.

By the way, don't forget to have the ignition on. I forgot that a couple of times. But I guess it's not that easy in your case.

/Fredrik

If you're getting '0' or 'FF' and not a bunch of non-'00-FC' 'chatter' data, then that suggests the 5v to the pin won't help ya. It also suggests no-comm, potentially PC-induced. Maybe try another PC for kicks? COM1 for sure? If you've got gender changers or extensions, make sure you're doing right there too. If you're not getting power to the MAX232 circuit, it'll also give you that zero deal. Just troubleshootin' in the wind here...

Here you can find Carbytes:

ftp://diy-efi.org/incoming/

When that works I suggest that you switch to Craig Moates s/w. EFIlive is made by the same guy/team that Carbytes, but if I got it correct, more professional.
