89 vette chip, will it work in 87z?

I know alot of people ask about the 89 vette chip. But no one has asked if you try to use the 89vette chip in a older z does the vats make a difference? My car does not have vats and i would like to get a 89 vette chip as a band aid till i can get dfi. Also how much do they usually cost at a gm dealer?

Sorry... No it woudln't work. Trust me... I've already tried it. First there's Vats, then the 89 chip has a different "mask ID" therefore making it incompatible with your ECM in its stock unmodified version. If you really want to make it work, email me privately and I'll adapt one from an 89 vette for your 87 Z.

I've been told by several friends on the GMECM list that all you have to do is disable VATS with TunerCAT and burn it in and you're good to go. It get's rid of the cold start injector and that's about it.

I'm just going by what I've heard...I'm going to use the ARAP bin(89 350 IROC) here pretty soon as a starting point for my 87 305 TPI application. I'm just gonna disable the VATS. What mask ID do you need to plug into it? Or can you change that in Tuner CAT? I've seen the PROM ID # that changes to 0 the second you make a modification to it.

Blade,

Your post is confusing. You said...

Could you explain what you mean in more detail. You can easily run $6E code ('89) in ANY 165 ECM. Why are you saying that you need to modify the ECM? Many tuners here have run the $6E code (particularly the ARAP) in 1986-1988 165 ECMs. In fact, this exactly what TPIS does when a customer wants to run the MiniRam in a 1986-1988 F or Y body. The MiniRam has no provision for the cold start injector. Thus, they upgrade the code to $6E code (which doesn't use the cold start injector). Works like a charm.

Gunning for NA 11's after installing Hooker LT Headers and reducing weight.

I was reffering to the .bin file in its stock unmodified form. Not the ECM itself ! I can see how that is confusing now... What I mean is you have to edit it and take out the VATS functions if you're gonna use it in a non-VATS car.
