86-88 bins
Just an idea that I have but are 86through 88 bins for the 165 ECU interchangeable?

'86 through '89 are interchangable. The only main difference is in '89, the coldstart valve was eliminated. This means that if you use the '89 code on an earlier year TPI setup, you can remove the coldstart stuff from your motor and it should run just fine. '89 (I think) was the year they introduced the Vehicle Anti-Theft System (VATS), which means you'll also have to disable the VATS code in the prom if you decided to use it in an earlier year TPI.
I'm trying to get ahold of an '89 chip to use as the starting point for my '86. I'll let you know how it goes when/if I get my hands on that chip!

Instead of 'getting your hands' on an '89 chip simply burn the ARAP bin on your '86-'88 chip. Remember to remove VATS and modify the necessary constants for FI sizing, etc. Should work like a charm. Greg Westphal did this on his '87. Maybe he will jump in here to expand on what I have said.

Yep, the '86 through '89 bins for the '165 ECU are interchangeable. I'm running a modified '89 ARAP code on my '87 IROC 305TPI with an A4 tranny. I changed the spark table to be the same as my stock '87 table, changed the injector constant (did have it at 20.7, but that was way too lean, it's 19.3 lbs/hr for the 305), modified the TCC tables a little, lower temps for the fan, disabled VATS, and a few other minor things. As far as the cold-start injector, I still have mine in, so I changed the table for Open Loop AFR % Change Vs. Temperature to all 1.56, just like it is in the '87 bin. If you disable or remove your cold-start injector, you should be OK just leaving that table like it is...

Ok, you guys convinced me! I just figured the 305 code would be a little easier to start from. Another motive I had for getting the dealer part is that I would then have another chip carrier to desolder and install the ZIF socket into. I'm a bit superstitious when it comes to modifying a part that would render my car useless if I make a mistake
Greg-Would you mind posting your BIN on the repository? I'd like to see what you did, maybe try it on my car as well, to use as a guide to my mods.

I just e-mailed Blade my latest iteration of the '89 code I'm running in my '87 IROC for the bin repository. I also included a .txt file describing every change I could remember making. I had a file with most of them, but wanted to make sure I included everything I had modified to make a 350 bin run my 305 engine.

Greg, under what year did you post your bin at the repository? 87 or 89? The reason I ask is because I looked at both places and could not find a bin with a .txt attached.
Thanks Tom

I had e-mailed them directly to Blade. I don't see a section for the '165 ECM aftermarket bins though, and the incoming ftp directory isn't working.
