Would it even be worth upgrading to the 87 ecm?

The PROM wont work. I doubt it's worth upgrading your ECM. Especially if you're doing it for an LG4 with a Q-Jet on it. The Q-Jet doesnt need a high (or higher) performance ECM to control it.

I should have been more specific, sorry.I have a 87 lg4 fomula.I am planning to put an 85 tpi unit on it.I can either use the 85 harness + ecm or get a 87 tpi harness and change the existing lg4 prom and keep the 87 ecm.If I use the 85 harness there will be some simple splicing.I just got a prom from a 87 tpi t/a.So if I can use my 87 lg4 ecm w/my 87 305 tpi prom and then I'll just need a 87 harness.I would rather not cut the factory harness and simply clip one in.From what I understand the 87 ecm has a faster data stream or something.Which ecm is better 85 or 87.I think the 87 would be better but is it worth it?

The 87 Carb ECM cannot control the TPI system. They're completely different. Your best bet is to get an 86 or 87 TPI computer and wire harness, because the 85 stuff stinks.

The 85 TPI ecm is an antique, the 87 TPI ecm is *OK*,
The 87 TPI ecm is fairly close to a LG4 harnes. For all that ork thou, you'd be much further ahead to use the 90-92 ecm, then you can drop the MAF sensor, and go MAP.
The 87 CCC carb is useful for CCC applications
