What do I need for a Laptop
I'm looking to get all the components I need to start burning my own chips. I'm going to buy a laptop and use the AKM interface cable for a Diagnostic tool. If possible, I would also like to use the laptop as the chip programmer/burner so I can make on site changes. Question is, what do I need in a laptop to be able to do all this?
What programmers besides the Xtronics Pocket Programmer connect to the computer via the parallel port?
From what I've been able to gather all the software needed to read the chip, edit the bin, and reprogram the chip has pretty low system requirements. I'm unsure about the Diagnostic software, but I can't imagine the relatively very low baud rate of my 88 L98 GTA ECM is going to tax even the slowest computers available today. Older Pentium Laptops are readily available on Ebay in the $100-200 range. The laptop will be 100% dedicated to prom burning so I don't need to worry about anything beyond those requirements. Am I correct in assuming a Pentium 150 laptop with 32meg of RAM will be more then adequate for the task? Anything else in particular I should be looking for?

That will be fine. To program EPROMs with a notebook, the parallel port Pocket Programmer from Xtronics was the cheapest I could find. I checked for others and did find another brand sold by Digikey that used the parallel port. However it was a lot more expensive than the Xtronics Pocket Programmer and at $129.99, the cheapest. Look up "Programmers" in the Digikey catalogue at www.digikey.com
I just got my Pocket Programmer and it appears to be reasonably well built. Unless something new comes along, or somebody finds a beter deal, the Xtronic Pocket Programmer was the cheapest I could find.

On the laptop, if you use GMEPro it will even run on a Win 3.1 machine and a 486/25 is a $50 laptop, with hunting. Tunercat takes a win95+.
I bought a AST 486/25 and it just happens to run off of 13.2ish just fine, use a cig lighter adapter I wired up. Do have a IBM 760L for some other duties. Think cheap...
