Miniram setup
Miniram setup
I'm looking into a miniram for my car and I was thinking about learning how to program my own proms. The car would either be a 91 z-28 or 89 iroc. Would the miniram run without a custom prom on either? I'm probobly putting heads and cam with the setup. I will get into the proms but don't have the cash for both right now. I just want to know what will happen. Will the car idle like crap fail emmissions and get horrible gas mileage or just not run as fast as possible?
Hello
I am a fellow windycity member.I passed the IL emissions with the miniram and 219 cam no problems. I did have to install a cat since I normally run true duals no cats.
Well as for programming I imagine you will being doing more than just swapp on a miniram. say cam, heads, headers, miniram. So yes by that stage you will be due for a chip swap. As for programming it does take a tad of learning and yes more things to buy.
Triaxon(moderator) has the new guy tech article which is excellent to get started.
As far as installing say AFr190 heads,LPE219 cam, minimram, etc. You car will start and run with the factory chip(same injectors 22lb) but will not be optimiun at all. But to get the car started and idleing you current chip should do.

Wow, that is EXACTLY what my buildup plan is!
Yes, Tim's new article is the perfect place to start and tell you everything you wanted to know about the equipment and software you need, where to get it, how to get it, plus more. That is where I started from and it definitely worked for me. Go here https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml for the article.
You will need a custom eprom, with the Miniram just to disable the EGR as the Miniram does not have one. If you don't, your SES light will come on. Turning off the EGR is a very simple process with the eprom burning equipment and a darn cheaper than paying TPIS $500.
Also, I have found on my current setup that when my EGR does not function, that I encounter a lot of knock retard at low rpm/high load situations; so I would expect the spark tables will probably have to be tweaked. I will tell you when I get my Miniram.
Lastly, while with just the EGR disabled the car will run in closed loop, the VE (fuel) Tables will not be matched for the power characteristics of a Miniram. At WOT you will be overly rich in the mid range as it setup for the TPI's torque band and not the Miniram's. And (more seriously), I believe you will run lean at the top end as this is where the Miniram shines and the TPI is gasping for breath. I will know for certain when I get my Miniram.
Right now is the perfect time to get into eprom programming IMO. Your car is basically stock (possibly with some bolt-ons) and your stock eprom is able to work. You can use the opportunity to "tweak" your existing eprom specifically for your car while having your stock eprom as a "backup" and not have to worry about disabling the car.
While tweaking your eprom is not a necessity at this point, there are definite advantages that you will find. My engine is now running much smoother and my driveability has greatly increased. Fuel economy is better (especially in city traffic) and I haven't even invoked "Highway Mode" yet.
Now that I am playing with the Spark Tables, I definitely feel an increase responsiveness and improvement in performance, though I have not yet quantified it. I hope I can sometime in the spring just before I install the Miniram.
Go for it, because the thought of giving TPIS $500 really bothered me and more than offsets the cost of all the equipment and software, plus you'll have to give them another $100 when you further modify your engine. You can get everything PLUS the regular version of Diacom for that money.

Yeah right now the car is stock except a catback, afpr, 24 lb./hr., ported plenum. Right now i was looking at a miniram setup but he wants 1600 for it. It has the miniram, rails, braided lines, 58mm throttle body, and 27lb./hr. injectors. I think thats a little too high. So i might not get it.
