PROM options for 85 TPI

I know the 85 year uses a different computer and a slightly different setup. Is this a true disadvantage? Do I have the option of usine the $6E bin or am I stuck modifying my own bin? I don't have any true engine mods yet and I don't plan on anything too major but I would like to know where I currently stand.

James,

You cannot use the $6E BIN. You have the 870 ECM and it uses a completely different EPROM and cannot run the $6E code. As I see it, you have 2 main options.....

1) Just stick with what you have. The biggest disadvantage that you have is that your baud rate (speed) of the ECM is much much slower than the 165. This means that you cannot collect nearly as much data in a given time interval as compared to the 165. However, TunerCat does offer a TDF file for the $1F calibration.
2) Convert to another ECM. This is a huge undertaking and would involve repinning new headers that will plug into the new ECM.

Ahhhh,
not that bad.
Even going to a 165 would be a huge step forward. 6870 I don't think would be that bad (C3 to C3 series of ecm), but a 730 would be more work, and even several steps further forward.

I saw on some other members' site where they did the upgrade themselves. It doesn't look bad. I'll get another ECM from a donor car and then study the changeover untill I'm a walking GM wiring manual and then do it over the summer. If it can be done then I can do it.

Hello
I did the upgrade to the 7730 ecm. The next step past the 165.
First let me say dont know the 870. yes it is a little harder to diagonse but the 870 does work. I know guys running 11's with the 870. I am just saying its not all that bad.
from another standpoint it would be harder to learn programming from the 85-870 ecm. due to the scan data logging. very minimal.
here is a link to a site thats has done both.

Thanks for the link.

I'll probably do the switch to the 165 this summer. I guess it would be harder to tune with almost no captured data as in the case of the 870. Being in CA, I don't want to arouse to much attention to the lack of a MAF sensor, even though the smog check mechanics wouldn't know whether it was supposed to be their or not. I guess I could have a fake MAF sensor but I don't thinks it's that important at this point.

I will probably experiment with the 870 first because it would probably be easier to learn/work on due to the fact that the PROM is bare and is easily dealt with. But having no experience of messing with PROMs (except for PC PROMs) and the ECM, the only things I know are from what I have read. I don't think $20 is prohibitive to allow me to buy two different definition files from tunercat when I later upgrade to the 165.

Perhaps the MAF will be more forgiving of my mistakes and engine setup.

Since you're in SoCal, my dad might have a replacement harness for you to swap your 85 car. Or he can take your stock harness and convert it to what you want. You can convert to 90-92 speed density legally in CA with no sweat.
