What is "flash" programming

What exactly is "flash" programming? My car is getting Dyno Tuned and they said that that is what they are gonna use for one of the tuning techniques.

Rather then burn eproms, there is a devise that emulates the eprom. They use a flash prom, which erases and can be rewritten quickly, some even on the fly changes. Usually $700-1000. For a pro shop a nice option.
Has noting to do with accuracy of tuning, just allows faster changes

If I can but in, a prom is a memory device. it stores bunch of 0's & 1's. to erase a UV prom you have to expose it to UV light for some period of time & the load in the new image. an EEPROM is an Electrically Erasable PROM. this means that you can send it a signal (the basic idea here not specifics) erase the image & load a new on on. this takes micro seconds not minutes. an emulator has a EEPROM in it. you connect it to your computer & when you are ready to send it a new image you push the go button & Bang its there. a flash prom is basically the same as an EEPROM but the way that it erases it is slightly different. i trust that you get the point. as Grumpy said, the emulator (EEPROM, cable, program etc) setup is an expensive way to go for a person that is going to do one car, but for a shop that is going to do a bunch of them time is $.

Oops, in answer to your question, this is a temporary thing. they flash & flash & flash & flash until it is right. then when they are done, they save the image & burn it into your prom. power down the car, remove the emulator & stick the memcal with the "new" prom in it. power the cpu back up & go for a test drive. it ought to run like a new car.
