Eprom guru's, what do you think? (long)

I'm in the process of getting a custom chip done by Ida Automotive in Morganville, NJ using his Dynojet chassis dyno and wideband O2 sensor. Since I've done away with the cold start valve, I suggested he start with a eprom file from an '89 vette(auto, 3.07 rear). (btw it could barely run on the stock chip). Ida burned the eprom and the car ran decently. His O2 sensor showed that I was running lean. It baselined at 271 rwhp (I didn't get the torque #). He then told me he would burn another chip and I would come back for another tuning session.
I went there this am and found that the chip wouldn't work at all. He told me that he suspected that would happen since the adjustment he was making to the MAF mapping parameters given my setup were beyond the chips capabilities. (whatever that means) He then suggested that since he was a modem dealer for superchips and that they could overcome the problem. When he called superchips, they said that they can't use the baseline data we generated the previous day since we have an 89 bin file plugged into an 87 chip holder. ( I don't think their is a difference). So they wanted me to buy an 89 chip to get the code off of and to use the actual chip holder (not sure if it's called that or not). Superchips uses the piggyback method of using the original chip and then their own. I don't feel like paying $60 for a chip I'll use once nor do I feel it's necessary. In addition I haven't heard many good things about superchips. I've already spent $300 for the initial testing and I am pissed. It seems like a waste of $300 if I stop now and go to Formato or Fatschips andwon't get a chip that maximizes my setup.
What do you all think?
Thanks

I think they're full of it. You shouldnt have to buy a new carrier. They're all the same for 87-89. For the money you're spending on that chip a carrier or a "piggy back" carrier should be included. You can make you own by unsoldering the stock chip and soldering a holder in its place so you can plug and unplug chips at your convenience. Look at Traxxion's tech article on this page and you'll see what I'm talking about. The "carrier" I'm talking to is reffered to as a "memcal".

Thanks for the response. I wish I had the time and expertise to really get into this myself. It's fascinating stuff.
