better the comb chamber, the less timing, right?

Well I tried the spark table from an 89 vette on my car and it seems to be way too advanced. As soon as I put a load on it it started to knock(as seen on scanner) and pull a whole lot of timing(my 02 was in the 800). If its true that a better combustion chamber shape needs less timing, should I just take 5 degrees out across the board and start from there.
By the way Im running AFR 190 heads(68cc)with 10:1 compression. I would think that these heads have a much better combustion chamber design compared to an eighties vette head.

I would think that you should pull 5 or more degrees of timing and then sneak up on the values that give the best performance.

Least advance, best power. You might find that you can run more or less timing and have the same performance. Less is more in this situation.
