Do I need Diacom?

Instead of spending the $200 for the software that allows me to read/store information from the computer onto a laptop, could i just hook up voltmeters to the oxygen sensor and the knock sensor and tune the chip from those? What other useful information can reading the computer give you that can help burning proms?

You can't log data with a voltmeter, nor can you read the data fast enough to know what to do with it. With a scan tool, Diacom, or most of the free programs, you can see all of the data the computer is seeing.

Well, if you had a voltmeter with RS232 port (these are actually getting pretty cheap these days) then you could log the data. But, as you said the sampling rate would probably be too slow to be useful. And, you'd only be able to log one sensor per meter.. You'd quickly approach the point where $200 software would be the cheaper alternative.

Use a $50 ALDL cable and my free software. It'll log all the data you want to disk, as fast as you want it to. Unless you're really going to use it on a dozen different cars, it's hard for me to understand why anyone would want to spend over $300 to do what they can do for nearly free.

Check previous posts, it works just fine. No charge, open source.

He wants $95 for his cable. I'd rather pay $50, but you have to spend what you have to spend... After dumping over 15k into my engine, now is no time to start being a tight-a$$!!!
