Octane retard

Glenn,

over in the TPI forum you were talking about octane retard. I thought it more applicable here on DIY, so...... spill the beans.

how is this applied. what triggers the 2 or 3 or 4 deg retard (a cycle of the knock count through 128 & then back to 0 or ?)? is it applied to every ignition event? Is this a count thing like knock counts where it gets to 128 & then starts over or is it a bit flag that gets set & is un-set w/a power cycle (0 & 1)?

Bob, I have family over for the weekend but I will respond to this message and explain what the "Octane retard" routine does (under the stock setup), the various parameters that effect it and how to modify them to either retain it but have the eprom recover it quickly or to disable it entirely.

It appears that SD TPI cars have this, but MAF TPI do not (or I have not been able to find a similar routine in there, though it may still exist buried somewhere). I cannot answer if TBI cars have this routine.

I personally prefer to disable it as the "Octane Retard" routine seems to just complicate tuning IMO.

I will most likely respond to this with a "P730" post to continue with Tim's desire that all "technical articles" be made with P730 to fasicilate collection one day into a future tech article.
