people using craig moates software and diacom...

does craigs' software allow you to view the captured data real time?

does diacom?

or is it even benificial to view the data real time or do you mostly record a run and then review it later?

I guess something is better than nothing, and since researching this software, it sounds great and will help me get started (when i upgrade my ecm and engine).

Both programs show real time numbers as you run and capture or save them as you go. I've used both and I'd say that Craigs program is just as good as diacom, but it will only work on a maf TPI, and I'm not to sure if it'll work on your 85 TPI as they are the 870 ecm and run on 160 baud rate. I'm almost sure that it won't but from what Craig has said before it seems pretty flexible if you know how to program at all.
If you can afford it get diacom plus then you'll have the ability to diagnose many different vehicles, if not try Craigs.
