EBL Questions

First of all - RBob, I asked you these questions in an email but am unsure if you will have time to write a response tonight so I figured I would throw it out here as well.

Anyway, I got the EBL and I need some help getting started. I am using the BURN1 chip burner and the program that came with it called "Flash & Burn". My engine is a 350 TBI.

There seems to be a default bin file on the EBL, the 1985 LG4 bin if I remember correctly. I have the EBL plugged in to the car, with 3 27SF512 chips to plug into the EBL, however it still runs without any chip installed. Why is this? Is the LG4 bin hard-coded into the EBL as a default? How can a 350 TBI run on a bin designed for a carbed 305 anyway? It runs really rich (I can smell it in the exhaust) and I have a 65# injector and a 61# injector with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I have a couple of 90# injectors but I dont want to plug them in until I can figure the EBL out.

I downloaded a couple stock bins from moates, two L05 bins from different ECMs. I tried burning them onto the chips and installed the chips in the EBL, however it still runs the same way as if there wasnt a chip installed. So I think I may be burning wrong.

Here is what my Flash & Burn screen looks like when I burn the chip. Anything look wrong?

I load file to buffer, select the bin I just downloaded, then erase the chip just to be sure, then hit program chip. I verify buffer with chip to make sure it burned, then I take the chip out to my car and stick it in the EBL. When I fire it up, it just runs like there is no chip installed and gives funky WUD readings - see below. I should also mention that when its running it gives a SES light. Could this be because I have my air cleaner off and therefore no IAT sensor?

When I run the WhatsUp display gives all kinds of funky readings. Sometimes it will say i'm idling at 400 RPMs when I know its more like 1500, and sometimes it will say i'm idling at like 6325 RPMs or something crazy like that. It also always says I'm going 152 MPH while I'm just sitting in my driveway. And when I look at the trouble codes it's throwing tons of different codes. All these codes and weirdo reading remain even when I shut off the engine. It gives even more funky readings with the engine not running and the key to "on".

Any help would be appreciated, I cant wait to see what I can get out of this EBL system. Plus I have an "old school" car guy looking over my shoulder who doesnt understand EFI and thinks I've just been screwed out of $400 for "some crappy snake-oil computer chip that doesnt even make the car run any better". Help me show him up!

I am far from being Rbob but maybe I can help. Your car is running (but poorly) because it is running in the limp home mode. The stock bins that you downloaded are most likely for a stock computer and not the EBL. In that case the computer will see the bin as being corrupted and go into limp home mode. I suggest starting with the bin for the EBL that Rbob has provided. I did that with my modded 305 and took it from there. Take the bin Rbob sent in the software cd and burn it and try that. Bur first you should read the documentation that Rbob sent also as it contains some suggestions for items to edit in the bin before initial startup.

Hope that helps.

By the way you will really like the WUD

DM91RS is spot on. Thank you for the post. I responded to dark's email, with too many more words (I need to figure out how to use fewer words).

The mention of 61 & 65 along with 90 # injectors. Leave the 61 or 65's in place. Then once it all starts working out, go to what is required. This will be become apparent when required.

RBob.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I understand it much more now that I got that cleared up.

The injector thing - I have one injector that is either 55# or 61# im not sure, and another injector that is 65#. They are mismatched, two different flow rates that is why I want to use the 90# injectors. No matter how hard I tune I will have a lean bank and a rich bank. I may not need the extra flow, however the fact that they are matched I would think would make them desireable over mis-matched.

The engine ran on the un-modified EBL.bin, however not very well. I'm currently trying to tweak things, however looking at the datalog I have no idea what to even look for. I dont even know what most of those values along the X axis even mean so I'm gonna have to do some more research.

Thanks again, I think I'm well on my way to getting a good tune.

Glad to hear that you got it running.

Did you read any of the documentation and edit the bin for your ride yet? Those things will help.

I would set the BPC for the 90lb injectors and run those rather than mismatched injectors. After seeing how lean I was with the 305 I would not hesitate to use the larger injectors and you have a 350.

Also get the engine up to running temp and use the VE Learn feature. It will start to get your part throttle settings in the fuel tables dialed in.

As far as what everything does in the XDF and on the WUD..........get to reading as there is alot of ground to cover there.

I printed out all the documentation and have been reading it whenever I get free time. Another problem is that I have an old laptop with a shot battery so I can only run it off the DC power adapter in my driveweay without actually moving. I'm trying to get a power inverter so I can plug it into my cigarette lighter, but until then can I try to tune my idle and part throttle settings without moving?

Been there done that with the laptop battery. Mine did not last a year with a new laptop. Now just use the inverter.

As far as tuning idle sitting still.........try it and see. Let it warm up until it reaches the WUD VE learn temp and then let it tell you what it should be as far as lean or rich. Rev it up a bit and "hold" the throttle at different rpm's (within reason) and watch the ve learn screen. The learn will take place if the cell is read for long enough. When learning the cell that is active will be green. While doing this "driveway tuning" get used to looking at the WUD and noting what the different readouts show.
