Not rocket science chip burning?

Not rocket science chip burning?
Guys, I know reading & burning chips should not be rocket science, but I'm having great difficulty in this for some reason. Need some advice. Here's my situation. I have a 749 with $58 on a chip that a friend burned for me. It's a modified Memcal with a 256 chip in it. I have the Moates adapter with 512k chips. All I want to do is read the bin from the 256 and burn it to the 512k adapter chips so I can modify the bin. Everytime I burn the chip & put it back in the car, check engine & fans come on. I'm not even modifying the bin. I can read the bin in Tunerpro etc. Just not sure what to do?
I read the chip at: Buffer 000000->003FFF, Chip 004000->007FFF (256 16k)
Burn at: Buffer 000000->003FFF, Chip 00C000->00FFFF (512 16k)
As far as I know the $58 is 16k or is it 32k? Any guidance?
