85 sucks monkey *****

Hey guys,

I got one of them chitty 85's with the first/worst ecu. I called the GM dealer and they said i could get an 89 for $220 (Im expecting to do all the repinning) Is there a diff between 86/89. We dont have a close enough wrecking yard with even a TPI camaro, so is there a better place than the dealer to get one? Is $220 to much? Thanks!

$220 for an ECM?! Well, that is a dealership over-the-counter price, so I guess that isn't surprising. Anyway, I'm lucky enough to have abundant junkyard pickings near me, and I'd be happy to sell you an ECM for way cheaper than that. e-mail me if you're interested! ae2598@wayne.edu

Go read the ECM interchange article in the Technical Articles section. It lists different INTERCHANGBLE ECM's, that way you can go get a corsica or beretta ECM and not pay an arm and a leg, you will need the plugs also. Do a search on this Messageboard for the P730 or 165-->730 conversions, there is plenty already posted.

Well as far as ECM's from other cars, Im not looking for an ECM swapping project, Im just looking to be able to burn my own proms, which I can't with the 85...

I just need to find something comfortably under $200

BTW,

I apologize if that interchange comment means that all those vehicles (165) also have interchanging plugs, if they do GREAT, if they dont.. Im going to have to get one from a camaro

In fact, even ECMs other than the 165 have plugs that are interchangable. The '062, from 2.8 and 4.3 TBI S-trucks use the intentical plugs as the 165. Don't know if all the same pins are connected, but thats correctable at least!

BTW.. A good source of 165 ECMs are 4-cylinder '91-up S-trucks. Has to be Iron Duke motor though, the newer 4-bangers use a different one..

You cna always try eBay. I've bought a number of TPI stuff from there. Just have to watch the bidding wars.
If you're changing ecms, do yourself a favor and go with the 730. Having one MAF die will cover all the expenses of the swap.
According to Some sources the 85 MAF is actually different then the 86-89, I've never tried that, just a headsup.

Yea I believe the MAF might be different, thats why the 85 has that burnoff thing :P

Well do I need a 165 wiring harness too or can i use the 870 harness + repinning?

Thanks

They are the same. Good 'ol Bosch. Zero to five volts out. A number of people have upgraded to the '165 ECM and retained their '85 MAFs.
